First Appeared at The Music Box, December 2003, Volume 10, #12

Combining garage rock and punk, The Dishes consistently has delivered simple, three-chord songs at a frenzied pace, and for the most part, its latest outing 3 doesnít alter that strategy. Cramming 9 tunes into a 24-minute space, the group assaults its music, turning it into a furious blast of bombastic mayhem that recalls everyone from The Kinks and The Stooges to The Who and the Sex Pistols. And thatís not the best part. The other third of the album is a single, 9 Ĺ minute track titled Got Something to Tell You that turns garage rock and punk upside-down and inside-out, stretching it into a psychedelic orgy of feedback-laden guitar. Granted, 3 is nowhere near as marketable or accessible as albums by The White Stripes or even The Hives, but one gets the feeling that the members of The Dishes just donít give a shit. Nor should they. For those who complain that rock ínĎ roll has lost its edge, 3 offers the perfect antidote.
3 is available from Barnes & Noble.
