Best-known for its debut single Dizz Knee Land, dada is back with El Subliminoso, another collection of excellent songs. This release, the band's third, doesn't quite attain the level set by its 1994 collection, American Highway Flower, but it is a fine album nonetheless.
Some of the subtleties of American Highway Flower are gone, and El Subliminoso has a bit more of an edge and a stronger blend of a techno/industrial beat. In addition, the psychedelic touches are more blatant. Remaining are the fine vocal harmonies from guitarist Michael Gurley and bassist Joie Calio and as well as dada's typically tongue-in-cheek lyrics.
The Spirit of 2009 is a swirling psychedelic piece reminiscent of the first album by Dukes of Stratosphear, and A Trip with My Dad creates the perfect musical landscape for its drug-induced lyrics. Star You Are, No One, and Hollow Man provide the more laid-back moments on El Subliminoso, and as such, they allow the vocals to really shine. ½
