Rusted Root
When I Woke
First Appeared in The Music Box,
April 1995, Volume 2, #4
Written by John Metzger

When I Woke This is quite an adventurous debut, opening boldly with a very psychedelic tune called Drum Trip. The
title pretty much sums it up. This song flows into a catchy tune called Ecstasy, and the
album is off and running. Every tine is very well played, is quite danceable, and the musicianship
is outstanding. From the Scottish/Irish sound of Send Me On My Way to the Moody
Blues/Jefferson Airplane mix on Cruel Sun, one of Rusted Root's best compositions, this album shines
brightly. In addition, this collection features an interesting array of instrumentation from Congas, Djmbe,
and Talking Drums to Flute, Pennywhistle, Banjo, and Marimba. There's also the usual assortment of
rock ‘n' roll instrumentation, including some very fine acoustic guitar playing.
