Fans of Nickel Creek’s inventive amalgam of bluegrass and pop are sure to
enjoy the music of 3 Fox Drive, a six-piece roots-oriented outfit that is
anchored by the members of upstate New York’s Fox family: Kim, Barb, and Joel.
The material on its latest endeavor Listen to the Music is lush with
harmony vocals with Kim featured as the centerpiece, and on original
compositions, such as This Little House of Mine and An Eye for an Eye,
she sounds strikingly similar to Carly Simon. Her voice gets downright brassy on
a cover of Shelby Lynne’s obscure Slow Me Down as well as on the title
track, which is a reinterpretation of the Doobie Brothers’ classic. Although the
music of 3 Fox Drive essentially is based in bluegrass, the musicians bring a
jaunty rock-driven sensibility to the table that shines throughout each of the
album’s dozen tunes — from the dizzying mandolin picking of Jim Reed on An
Eye for an Eye to the mournful fiddle of Megan Lynch on Man behind the
Wall. In short, 3 Fox Drive is the place where American mountain culture
intersects with technical expertise and captivating showmanship to formulate an
impressive musical package.
