The Band
High on the Hog
(Rhino)
First Appeared in The Music Box,
June 1996, Volume 3, #4
Written by John Metzger

The Band is back with an album of mostly cover tunes. In fact, only two songs are
original
compositions. Perhaps, it's for the better though. Back to Memphis is a smooth, bluesy number that translates better on stage than it does
here. Where I Should Always Be is one of the best songs on the collection
and it recreates those
Robbie Robertson's laid-back and mellow style. Rick Danko does a fine job on vocals here and provides
a thundering bass line anchoring Garth Hudson's delicate keyboard playing and flighty soprano
saxophone solo. Forever Young is another of The Band's classic performances of a
Bob Dylan-penned song, and it's lovingly dedicated to the memory of Jerry Garcia -- a fitting tribute!
