About A Boy
(BMG)
T.J. Simon's #10 album for 2002
First Appeared at The Music Box, February 2003, Volume 10, #2
Written by T.J. Simon
Fans of Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy) were eagerly
awaiting his follow up to the brilliant 2000 release The Hour of Bewilderbeast. And 2002 was a prolific year for the British one-man-band
with two releases of original material: an LP titled Have You Fed the Fish?
and the soundtrack to the motion picture About a Boy. It’s a safe bet
that nobody expected the soundtrack to be the superior album. It’s a delightful
mix of instrumental tracks (that served as the score to the film) and
intelligently literate lyrical numbers. Gough is clearly influenced by the
songwriting style of John Lennon as evidenced by the hit-worthy tracks Something to Talk About and Silent Sigh. The About a Boy
soundtrack is both a fantastic pop album and a solid companion piece to the
extremely entertaining film. ½
