The Beatles
Free as a Bird
(Capitol)
First Appeared in The Music Box, March/April 1996, Volume 3, #2
Written by John Metzger
Free as a Bird is another high-priced CD single from The Beatles. Costing $5, the set contains a mere 9 minutes of music that is meant to accompany the full-length album Anthology Volume 1. Nevertheless, a pair of tasty nuggets are included, such as an alternate take of I Saw Her Standing There. This version was recorded after the more familiar rendition that appeared on Please Please Me. In fact, the introductory count for the final version was taken from this rendition. This Boy gives a glimpse into the recording process with a couple of fun, but incomplete takes, both of which break down in laughter. The CD closes with the complete version of the 1967 holiday song Christmas Time (Is Here Again), which originally appeared in pieces, scattered throughout the fan club's Yuletide release.
Free as a Bird is available from Barnes & Noble.
