Brady Rymer
I Found It!
(Bumblin' Bee)
First Appeared in The Music Box, December 2004, Volume 11, #12
Written by John Metzger
For those who might be wondering what it would sound like if Bob Dylan and Al
Kooper were to collaborate on a song geared towards kids, the title track from
Brady Rymer’s latest disc I Found It! delivers a rather insightful
answer. With a swirling organ accompaniment plucked straight from Like a
Rolling Stone, Rymer offers a playfully upbeat soundtrack meant to provide
solace to those suffering from that common childhood frustration — the lost toy.
Elsewhere, he lovingly paints scenes of little tykes drawing pictures on the
sidewalk, preparing for a bath, and making breakfast with mom, and each is laced
with a pleasant, easy-going, and infectious fusion of folk, pop, and rock.
Unlike his peer Justin Roberts, Rymer sometimes struggles to strike the perfect
balance between emotional depth and educational opportunity, and his tales too often
seem more like detached observations than those that have sprung forth from
inside a child’s fragile mind. Even so, his tasteful and occasionally silly
arrangements — the circus-like atmosphere of Eatin’ Animal Crackers, the
conga-driven funk of the body-part tutorial Ding Dong, and the perky
bounce of the imagination-stirring I’m a Little Raindrop, for example —
are simply irresistible. Indeed, much like Rymer’s first two outings, I Found
It! is a fun-filled jaunt that kids and parents can enjoy together. ½
