Considering that it was meant only to be a promotional disc, Limited
Edition is a rather intriguing outing from the David
Nelson Band. The first three tracks were recorded in the studio and offer a glimpse into a different side of
the group than is displayed on the its sophomore outing Keeper of the Key.
Yvonne is a spicy, cajun-bluegrass number punctuated by the accordion of keyboardist Mookie
Siegel. John Hardy's Wedding, penned by David Nelson and Robert Hunter, updates the Carter
Family's John Hardy Was a Desperate Man, and the collective gives it a bluesy inflection. Born
Sidestepper is perhaps the best of the studio recordings. It bounces along a Band-like groove
and features the twin-guitar interplay of Nelson and Barry Sless. The remaining four songs were recorded live, and though they don't quite reach the heights
achieved on Keeper of the Key, they're still quite remarkable. The Wizard's Son blazes
with magical momentum, and Freight Train Boogie is guaranteed to get your feet moving as it
relentlessly speeds down the track. Extra Sox, an instrumental, gives a rather strong hint at
what would later develop into the concluding jam from See So Far on Keeper of the Key. ![]()
