Following in the footsteps of his hit Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,
Elmo Shropshire (better known as Dr. Elmo) puts a comical jolt into Halloween on
his latest effort Sings the Boos. The album is a musical hodgepodge of
novelty numbers that run the gamut from the Tin Pan Alley-meets-saloon stomp of
The Fly to Scariest Thing I’ll Ever Do’s bizarre blend of haunted
organ and mariachi horns to the spooky waltz of The Witch and The Toad.
Much like his previous outings, the collection isn’t all smooth sailing —
Texas Chainsaw Halloween worked better when it was called Texas Chainsaw
Christmas, for example, and Redneck Dracula is a little too Weird Al
Yankovic-ian in its Rocky Horror-style appropriation of the perennial
smash Monster Mash. Even so, Dr. Elmo’s twisted humor is as sharp as
ever, and when he blends it with an emotional edge, as he does on the misfit
tale of Pointy the Pyramid Pumpkin, the result is as touching as it is
funny. ![]()
