The Hatters
The Madcap Adventures of the Avocado Overlord
(Atlantic)
First Appeared in The Music Box, August 1995, Volume 2, #7
Written by John Metzger
Fans of the Allman Brothers Band and Blues Traveler ought to do themselves a
favor and check out The Hatters, the latest jam band fad of the month.
It's latest endeavor, which was released last year, is The Madcap Adventures
of the Avocado Overlord, and it's a remarkably promising excursion.
The highlight of the set is the extended, blues-based romp through Madness of the Green,
which features Adam Hirsh and Adam Evans swapping acid-tinged guitar solos over Jon Kaplan's bouncing bass. Hirsh
also provides strong vocals throughout the set, including on the majestic The Last Walt. Given the
resurgence of the Allman Brothers Band as well as the increasing popularity Blues Traveler
and Widespread Panic, The Hatters should be able to cash in.
