Despite his declining health, Jerry Garcia’s final years were extremely busy
ones. In addition to his regular touring schedule with the Grateful Dead as well
as the Jerry Garcia Band, he managed to find time to reconnect with old pal
David Grisman for a series of recording projects, jam sessions, and occasional
concert performances. The second album spawned from this fruitful collaboration
was the lighthearted Not for Kids Only. As the title suggests, one need
not have children to enjoy this collection of traditional tunes and folk
standards. Joined by notable session player Hal Blaine as well as several
longtime associates of Grisman (including Joe Craven and Jim Kerwin), the duo
tackle everything from Elizabeth Cotton’s Freight Train to the bluegrass
favorite Hot Corn, Cold Corn to a monumentally beautiful rendition of Shenandoah Lullaby. Even better, Garcia and Grisman get downright silly on
songs like Arkansas Traveler, There Ain’t No Bugs on Me, and Horse Named Bill. As a result, the album was a refreshing bright spot for
Deadheads, and it still stands as a fun-filled ride for adults and children
alike. ![]()
