JW-Jones Blues Band
My Kind of Evil
(Northern Blues)
First Appeared in The Music Box, December 2004, Volume 11, #12
Written by Brad Podray
If J.W. Jones has any say in the matter, the blues are far from dead, and his
latest effort My Kind of Evil successfully places a modern edge upon
old-school, New Orleans-baked grooves. There’s a grandiose ambience to the
entire album, and Jones wisely inserts enough "jam time" into his compositions
to allow all of the musicians in his band to have an opportunity to prove their
worth. Although each track captures a different aspect of the blues, there are
enough common elements among the songs to make the band’s style classifiable.
Nevertheless, stellar craftsmanship makes this set extremely rewarding. The
vocals glaze over the instrumental interplay like butter, and not a note is
missed. From the toe-tapping Shake that Mess to the incredibly fat sound
of Blue Monday, the JW-Jones Blues Band’s kind of evil is definitely one
that should be spread around more often. ½
