Nick Luca’s Tucson trio plays middle-of-the-road pop anchored in a classic
rock sensibility that recalls the dullest moments of Steely Dan. Luca himself
has impressive studio credentials as he’s worked on a variety of projects with a
myriad of artists, including John Doe, Neko Case, and Calexico. On his latest
outing You Win Again, Luca brings forth a dozen mediocre tracks that,
while technically proficient, are ultimately forgettable. On songs like
Summer Rain, his efforts yield results that are marginally pleasing, but his
muted vocals leave much to be desired, particularly on duds such as Superstar.
Simply put: This is a disappointingly inferior album from someone who has worked
with enough talented folks to know better. ![]()
