A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan
(Epic)
First Appeared in The Music Box, April 1997, Volume 4, #4
Written by John Metzger
This set was recorded on May 11, 1995 at a concert hosted by Jimmie Vaughan with Double Trouble as the backing band. Included here are individual performances from Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, and Dr. John, as well as three tracks featuring an all-star cast that also include Art Neville. Indeed, incorporating so many great artists with strong blues roots into this show helped to turn this tribute into a solid endeavor. Everyone delivers the goods with their own approach and style, and none diminish the power of the original song. Of particular note is B.B. King's version of Telephone Song, which he learned in 45 minutes immediately prior to the concert. This version features some fine interplay between B.B. King and Jimmie Vaughan. Buddy Guy tears through Long Way from Home with incredible passion in both his playing and singing, as does Clapton on Ain't Gone 'N Give Up on Your Love. All the group performances are outstanding, particularly the powerful SRV Shuffle.
