Sweet Honey in the Rock - The Women Gather

Sweet Honey in the Rock
The Women Gather

First Appeared at The Music Box, July 2003, Volume 10, #7

Written by John Metzger

On its latest effort The Women Gather, Sweet Honey in the Rock celebrates its 30th anniversary by continuing to do what it does best that is, deliver stirring, emotionally heavy songs with nothing more than its majestic voices and the occasional percussion accompaniment. Throughout the album, the ensemble blends social activism (Give the People Their Right to Vote!) with somber memorial (Fly) and righteous, celebratory thanks (Somebody Has Prayed over Me), and as it does so, its voices combine in ways that are wondrously affecting. Indeed, over the course of The Women Gathers 17 songs, a powerful statement is made that community and love can rise above tyrannical oppression and make the world a better place.
