Faced with the prospect of recording an album in the wake of its masterpiece
Dulcinea, Toad the Wet Sprocket opted instead to put together In Light
Syrup, a collection of B-sides, movie-tunes, fan club singles, and
unreleased tracks, all of which were recorded between 1992 and 1994. As it turns
out, it actually is a rather decent compilation of material. It seems odd that
Good Intentions was left off the band’s breakthrough endeavor Fear,
considering that it’s a superb single, one that pointed the way to Dulcinea.
Other standout tracks include the XTC-inflected Hobbit on the Rocks and
the stargazing eeriness of Hope. Diehard fans of Toad the Wet Sprocket
certainly will find In Light Syrup to be filled with treasures, and
everyone else will find the set to be reasonably satisfying. ![]()
