Soul Comes Home might not be the all-inclusive, ultimate collection of
Stax sounds, but its 16 tracks, which were recorded at a concert held in Memphis
on April 30, 2003 to celebrate the grand opening of the Stax Museum of American
Soul Music, largely hit the mark. William Bell’s rendition of his classic You
Don’t Miss Your Water is profoundly powerful; Solomon Burke delivers an
exuberantly stunning cover of Try a Little Tenderness; Booker T. & the MGs (the Stax house-band) offers a fiery interpretation of its instrumental gem
Green Onions; Little Milton digs deep into the shimmering strains of
That’s What Love Will Make You Do; and Al Green unleashes not one, but two
blissful tunes (Let’s Stay Together and Love and Happiness) from
his exquisite catalog. Indeed, though the Stax label collapsed in 1975, its
music will live forever, and the rousing set Soul Comes Home endearingly
illustrates why it was home to one of the most vibrant and vital assemblages of
artists that ever existed. ![]()
