There’s nothing particularly revelatory about any of the 18 tunes featured on
Singers and Songwriters Christmas Songs, for each is delivered in as
straight-forward a manner as possible. The performers included in the collection
run the gamut from Rosanne Cash to Dan Fogelberg to Joan Baez, and each offers a
holiday tune that is more precious than the last. Highlights include Willie
Nelson’s delicate rendering of his own Pretty Paper, Emmylou Harris’
stunning version of Silent Night, and Art Garfunkel’s tender take on the
hymn O Come All Ye Faithful. Even so, this set is too genteel for its own
good, and as such, it is better suited to an evening of quiet reflection than
one of excited celebration.
