Since 1999, violinist and classical music arranger Will Taylor has hosted an
irregular concert series in Austin, Texas’ historic St. David’s Episcopal
Church, and for each event, he invites a variety of singer-songwriters to
perform original compositions while backed by Taylor’s nine-piece mini-orchestra
known as Strings Attached. A dozen enchantingly dressed-up folk-rock songs from
these special events are captured on his new disc Collaborations. The
album’s high points include Eliza Gilkyson’s Easy Rider and Shawn
Colvin’s Set the Prairie on Fire, and videos of Gilkyson and Colvin
supported by Strings Attached are also included on this enhanced CD. Other
noteworthy moments on this exceptional collection include the heavy, hand-drum
propelled Volcanoes from Patrice Pike, and the Tin Pan Alley flavor of
Libby Kirkpatrick’s In this Life. The upgrading of these lovely
singer-songwriter tunes with lush string-and-horn arrangements was a fantastic
idea, and Taylor is to be celebrated for it. With the net proceeds from
Collaborations being donated to a Texas-based, children’s charity, what’s
not to like? ![]()
