51st Annual Grammy Awards:
Nominees, Winners, & Commentary
First Appeared in The Music Box, February 2009, Volume 16, #2
Written by John Metzger

The Grammy Awards broadcast is supposed to celebrate the best songs and albums of the preceding year, regardless of genre. In theory, it does. Trophies not only are distributed to artists performing everything from traditional folk to heavy metal to classical music, but they also are given to those working in smaller niches, such as Native American and Cajun fare. The problem, however, is that it is nearly impossible to glean this information from watching the program on television.
There was a time when the Grammy broadcast wasn’t so monotonously safe. Somewhere along the line, however, the jazz, blues, and classical artists that once were given opportunities to shine have been shoved aside in order to make room for a predictable parade of Billboard chart-toppers. As a result, the show no longer provides a forum for broadening the public’s purview. Instead, it has become a three-hour extravaganza that emphasizes the acts that already have achieved mass popularity as well as the performers on which the industry thinks it has the best chance of making a quick buck.
As has been its custom in recent years, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), which operates the Grammy Awards, played along with the wishes of both the industry and CBS. First and foremost, it continued to turn its attention away from presenting a comprehensive overview of the year’s best music. Only a few of the trophies were distributed during the broadcast, and with the exception of an ode to the music of The Four Tops, lifetime achievement awards were given out so rapidly that they seemed mostly like afterthoughts. Last year, Herbie Hancock shocked the world by winning the award for Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters. This year, there weren’t any real surprises, save for one possible exception: the fact that Katy Perry’s I Kissed a Girl wasn’t derived from a Saturday Night Live skit but rather was meant to be taken seriously.
Throughout the show, NARAS assembled a steady stream of presenters and performers who were safely whitewashed for consumption by the mainstream. Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock, who not surprisingly had a new movie to plug, appeared to act as a host of sorts, though thankfully he disappeared shortly after his embarrassing, opening monologue, never to return to the stage. Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock, and The Jonas Brothers (with Stevie Wonder, no less) managed, respectively, to turn country, southern rock, and R&B into bland, arena-ready pop. Instead of being allowed to tackle a song from his excellent new album Home Before Dark, Neil Diamond was asked to deliver Sweet Caroline for the umpteenth time. Based solely upon this year’s crop of nominees for Best New Artist, the industry surely is in more trouble than anyone previously had thought.
If the night belonged to anyone in particular, however, it surely was the duo of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. They deservedly took home five awards — for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year — for material from their 2007 effort Raising Sand. Then again, their only real competition came in the latter category for which Radiohead’s In Rainbows also was nominated. Unfortunately, the number of winners who truly earned their trophies were few and far between, at least during the prime time broadcast. Jennifer Hudson’s victory in the category of Best R&B Album, for example, may have provided a happy ending to her troubled year, but did she really make a better recording than music legend Al Green?
Everything is relative, of course, but in the grand scheme of things, this year’s Grammy broadcast, regardless of its deficiencies, actually fared better than most. Returning to the larger-than-life theatrics of its Popmart tour, U2 opened the show with a performance of Get on Your Boots, the first single from its forthcoming album No Line on the Horizon, which is slated for release on March 3. The song is driven as much by The Edge’s guitar as it is by Bono’s vocals, which seemed to connect Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues to the hip-hop scene. Not to be outdone, Radiohead provided the show’s most thrilling moment when it employed a marching band to replicate and add heft to the hypnotic, rhythmic cadence of 15 Step. Elsewhere, Plant, Krauss, and T Bone Burnett masterfully highlighted a pair of songs from Raising Sand — Rich Woman and Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On) — while Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl united for a muscular romp through I Saw Her Standing There.
In the end, NARAS, CBS, and the recording industry ought to be happy that they didn’t put together yet another show that was utterly drab and dull. This year’s broadcast surely had its low points, but there were enough intriguing moments to make the program at least modestly satisfying. With any luck, next year’s Grammy Awards will build upon the upward momentum that was created, though placing a bet on this notion likely is riskier than the stock market.
Without further ado, here is a complete list of this year’s nominees. The winners are highlighted in bold.
